Hinge Trophy Final report

Date published: 31 Jan 2025

After the terrible weather that scuppered Round 2 at Prince’s a fortnight or so ago, it was a relief to see clear blue skies at the Royal St. George's Golf Club for the final of the 2024/2025 Hinge Trophy. Twenty players took to the esteemed links in search of that sparkling round which could herald the first silverware of the season, and with no Round 2 score to form the usual 36-hole aggregate, it was a straight shoot-out over 18 holes for the trophy.

Although the wind was not overly vigorous, the course put up a good fight, and low scoring was hard to come by. First in with a three-over-par 73 was Elliot Dole (Shooters Hill), helped along by a level-par back nine. Greg Diddams (Upchurch River Valley), in the following group, matched that score but would come to rue his bogey-bogey finish. Out on the course, Chestfield’s Dan Cooke – who only came in as a last-minute reserve the night before – was going great guns after a one-under-par front nine, followed by an eagle on the par 4 12th. But an errant drive on the 13th would result in a double bogey, and four more shots went adrift over the closing holes. But he dusted himself off and, along with Greg and Elliot, assembled on the first tee for a sudden death play-off, which he duly won at the first extra hole with a par. Well done, Dan. Exciting for the spectators but probably more stressful than he would have liked it to be!

We thank Royal St. George’s for their continued support of this long-standing event and for making us so welcome. Thanks must also go to our referees and volunteers who braved the cold to make sure the day ran smoothly.

A fine start to our 2025 season.
