It was an early start at Chislehurst for the men’s 36-hole Mid-Age Championship but the sun was already shining and the prospect of a happy day’s golfing stretched ahead of our 50 competitors. Chislehurst is an unusual course with eight par 3s and a yardage of 5,117 from the tips, but as anyone who has ever putted on their beautiful greens can attest, it most certainly has teeth! How would our mid-agers fare over the par 66 layout?
The first score posted was a level-par round by the defending champion and home player, Liam Burns, a score that was equalled by playing partner, Danny Jones (Wildernesse). But this was swiftly bettered by Rochester and Cobham’s Nick Panting with a solid 64 which saw him take the lunchtime lead. Only four other players – Michael Evans, Michael Vandenberg, Matt Gibson and Danny O’Reilly – broke 70 in the morning; the course was putting up a good defence. In the afternoon round, Nick was progressing nicely, being only one over after 15 holes, but an unfortunate finish was to ruin his chances of taking the title and he would have to be content with third place on this occasion. Danny battled away gamely against Liam, shooting a steady 67, but the home man was not to be denied and a three-under round of 63 would see him take the title for the third year running. Many congratulations, Liam, a superb achievement.
In the handicap section, home players used their knowledge to good effect as Jack Highwood and Danny Winter took second and third spots respectively. But coming out of the pack to take top prize, courtesy of a sparkling afternoon round of 63, was Wrotham Heath’s James Jones, just pipping Jack on countback.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Chislehurst Golf Club for their terrific support of this event. Captain Paul and his team of volunteers did a sterling job and their time and effort was very much appreciated by players and officials alike.
We very much look forward to returning to this most hospitable venue for the Women’s Senior Championship in July.
