Statham Trophy report

Published: 18 Feb 2026

The word ‘brutal’, so frequently overused in a golfing context, really was appropriate to describe the conditions at The Royal St. George's Golf Club for the tenth playing of the Statham Trophy. A bitter and constant wind cut across the links, and our 30 young players should be commended for sticking it out and trying their hardest on a day when many would not even have ventured out.

The team format sees three teams, representing the North, South and Central regions of Kent, do battle over 18 holes of Stableford play, with the best eight scores from ten counting. In the previous nine editions, the Central team have won five times, with the South just one victory behind. Would today see the Central team move further ahead? Would the South make it honours even? Or perhaps the North might finally get to etch their name onto the shield.

Sadly, the North must wait for another year as their combined score of 212 points left them in third place. Runners-up, with 221, were the Central region, so that meant that the South retained their trophy with a score of 226 points. Congratulations to the team of Lexi Donohue, Tom Chapman, Teagan Ford, Will Sprent, Luke Wardell, Skye Fontanelli, Arthur Saunders, Jasper Nutley-King, Elliott Flisher and Baden Brown.

A special well done to Lexi for the best girls’ score of the day with 32 points, and also to Oliver McDonnell, who went one better with 33, for the boys.

Our thanks, as always, to The Royal St. George’s Golf Club for their faultless hospitality, and a very big thank you to our referees and volunteers – Ken, Ian, Allan and Tim – who braved the elements to help our youngsters round. Everyone was thoroughly deserving of their hot dinner!
