It was touch-and-go as to whether any golf would be played in the Robin Young Qualifier this year due to the extremely wet conditions of late but, to the great relief of organisers and players alike, we were given the nod from Littlestone Golf Club to play, albeit on a fewer number of holes than the regulation eighteen. With holes 4, 5 and 7 out of action, the par for the day was reduced to 57 rather than the usual 71.
By the end of proceedings only one player could boast that he’d broken 60 and that was Bearsted’s Ross Capeling, who shot a one-over 58. Two shots behind, in second place, was local man, Derek Kindercliff-Jones, on countback from John Heywood (Sundridge Park).
Taking nett honours was James Kelly (Royal Blackheath) with a 56, closely followed by Robert Brack (Gillingham) on 57, on countback from County President and Littlestone expert, Chris Reynolds.
Congratulations to the top 30 finishers in the gross standings who now qualify to play in the final at The Royal St. George’s Golf Club on 12th March.
Thank you to our team of volunteers – Ian, Helen, Kathie, Ingrid, Marilyn and Diana – who gave up their time to referee, act as starter, ball-spot and guide the players around the course, thank you most sincerely; without your generosity we simply couldn’t put on our county competitions.
And a special thank you to David and his team at Littlestone for ensuring the day went ahead as planned and for their traditional warm welcome.
