Safeguarding Workshops in July and August

We are pleased to announce that in conjunction with England Golf, we will be hosting a series of workshops – one for Welfare Officers called a ‘Time to Listen’ on Monday 23rd July 2018 and the other, which is aimed at the Club’s Junior Organiser called ‘Safeguarding & Protecting Children’ on Thursday 23rd August 2018.

The Kent Golf Union is covering the cost of these workshops and as places are limited, we would ask that each Club books just one space and if there are spaces available in the week prior to the workshops, then we will offer Clubs the opportunity to book a second place.

Details of each are below.

Welfare Officer Workshop – A Time to Listen

The venue – Bearsted Golf Club - Monday 23rd July.

Two sessions have been planned. 1.30pm–4.30pm and 6pm-9pm.

The maximum number of candidates for each session is 16.

In addition to the UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children (SPC) workshop, it is recommended that the Club Welfare Officer attends the Time To Listen Workshop. This is a 3 hour workshop, developed by the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit, specifically aimed at the Club Welfare Officer.

This workshop builds on basic safeguarding awareness and focuses on implementation in the club environment. It also gives individuals an opportunity to discuss specific issues, challenges and good practice in a friendly environment.

The workshop will:

•Identify what a Club Welfare Officer does

•Describe how a Club Welfare Officer works with others to create a child-centred environment

•Explain how the Club Welfare Officer role fits into the wider safeguarding environment

•Apply learning to case studies, including sharing good safeguarding practice

As part of your affiliation to England Golf and the Kent Golf Union there is an expectation that you will have a policy in place for safeguarding children.  Within this policy there is a requirement to have a trained Club Welfare Officer.

You can register your place at a workshop by contacting the KGU Secretary, Sarah McDonald.

Further information on the role of the Club Welfare Officer, guidance and a job description is available from England Golf and can be found on the England Golf website in the section  “Supporting Volunteers”  https://www.englandgolf.org/page.aspx?sitesectionid=2657&sitesectiontitle=Volunteers

Safeguarding & Protecting Children (SPC) Workshop – this course is aimed at the Club’s Junior Organiser

The venue – Bearsted Golf Club – Thursday 23rd August.

One session has been planned 6pm-9pm. However if there is a significant take up for this course, then we will endeavour to hold an afternoon workshop in addition to this evening one.

The maximum number of candidates for this session is 20.

Workshop Description

Every child deserves to enjoy their sport. This workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse and give you the tools and confidence to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively.

All clubs should offer staff, volunteers and coaches access to appropriate safeguarding training. It is recommended that all those who have significant contact with children attend the UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop (SPC).

This is a 3 hour workshop that helps remove the “scare” factor felt by some when confronted with the topic of safeguarding.

Upon completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications of your coaching
  • Explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse and recognise their potential impact on your response
  • Recognise and respond to possible signs of child abuse
  • Take appropriate action if concerns about a child arise

Individuals working with children should refresh their safeguarding knowledge at least every 3 years.

You can register your place at this workshop by contacting the KGU Secretary, Sarah McDonald.
