England Golf Boys’ County Finals – 27th– 29th August

England Golf Boys’ County Finals – 27th – 29th August

Tuesday the 27th August marked the start of the England Golf Boys’ County finals at the beautifully presented Kent venue of North Foreland Golf Club near Broadstairs. The 1st day of play began in a match against Devon in the bright yet calm conditions in the morning foursomes the team got off to a good start with a 7 and 5 win from County Captain Jacob Kelso and George Young and a tremendous half from Jack Shipton and Ollie Gaisford after being 4 down at one point which left the team at a 1.5 – 1.5 tie after the morning foursomes, sadly narrowly missing out in the afternoon singles with an extremely closely fought 3.5 to Devon and 2.5 to Kent separating the teams by just a single point and all of the individual matches being extremely close.

Wednesday 28th August saw Kent take on Lancashire looking to better their performance and get points on the board. A superb start to the day with Team Kent taking a 2.5 – 0.5 lead after the morning foursomes with fantastic Golf from all of the players. The afternoon singles were packed with exciting Golf from the very start and some matches finishing in superb style such as Oliver Lewis-Perkins holing his bunker shot on the 17th Hole to take a 3 and 1 win in the afternoon singles! The team finished the afternoon singles 2 – 4 meaning a 4.5 – 4.5 draw against Lancashire and the first point on the board for team Kent.

Thursday 29th August saw Kent take on Northamptonshire in the final day of the Boys’ County Finals, and team Kent were looking to take the win to finish a potential 2nd overall for the week. A turbulent morning of weather for the final day of play with looming dark clouds and a major drop in temperature everyone feared for the worst weather possible, however it managed to hold off and returned to summer conditions by mid-morning. The foursomes against Northamptonshire saw a tough morning session in all matches with a close 2 – 1 loss in the foursomes looking to improve in the afternoon singles matches sadly Northamptonshire were extremely strong winning the first 5 matches and Kent losing the afternoon singles session 5 – 1, therefore an overall total of a 7-2 and sadly a fourth place finish for Kent overall.

A huge thanks to all of the fantastic volunteers from North Foreland Golf Club without which this event would not have been possible and all of the assistance from England Golf volunteers and referees.

Thanks also to the constant support of all of the Kent Golf officials and fantastic spirits of all of the players throughout the week and a special thanks to Manager Paul Cannons and the assistance of Duncan Kelso, Kent Golf Secretary Sarah McDonald and Kent Golf President Jim Pocknell throughout the week, and to the thorough assistance of Squad Coach Tim Milford all week. Congratulations to the champions Devon and good luck to all of the players for the rest of their playing season.
