Robin Young Trophy

Date published: 18 Mar 2022

After a 2 year absence, the Robin Young Trophy returned to the County Calendar on a beautiful, sunny, spring day at Royal St George's Golf Club.

Formerly known as the Senior Trials, the event gives the Counties finest Senior players the chance to showcase their talents and stake a claim for the Senior team for the year. A shame of course, that the Seniors team manager is yet to be confirmed for the year, but he will certainly have a wealth of talent at which to select his team from once he gets started.

A closely fought competition saw just four shots separating the top 11 players, with outgoing interim manager, Alan Austin, being one of those in a tie for 9th place with a gross 77. 2nd and 3rd position were decided by countback with Richard Tomlin of Sundridge Park and Danny Holmes of London Club both returning scores of 74. The winning score though, came from Peter Newman of Chestfield Golf Club after his score of 73, secured the victory and presentation of The Robin Young Trophy. Some moving words from Peter in his acceptance speech of his pride at having known Robin Young and what a wonderful man he was, added some sentiment to the occasion. Congratulations Peter and good luck for the season ahead.

Our gratitude as always go to the amazing work and support that Col. Tim Checketts and Assistant Secretary, Robert Leigh at Royal St George's continue to show to the county in hosting these events.

Finally, the day leaves us optimistic for the season and we wish our senior team the best of luck.
