Kent Youths’ Championship

Date published: 15 Aug 2022

The day dawned bright and uncomfortably hot for this year’s Kent Youths’ Championship at Knole Park. Despite the recent difficulties with the extreme weather, the course looked as inviting and well-kept as ever; a credit to the greenkeepers.

The morning pace was set by Max Murray (Sundridge Park) who was the only player to break par with a one-under 69. Knole Park member, Luca Esposito, playing off a course handicap of six, found himself two off the pace at the halfway stage, with Connor Bell (Royal Blackheath) and Elliot Dole (Shooters Hill) both poised on 72.

Perhaps, not surprisingly given the testing conditions, only eight players improved their scores in the afternoon. The best of those, with a fine 67, was Connor Bell, taking the scratch trophy in style. Elliot Dole, the only other player to break par after lunch with a 69, finished two behind in second place. Max Murray, despite an afternoon 75, held on for a creditable third place in both the scratch and handicap competitions.

Handicap honours were taken by Luca Esposito who followed his morning nett 65 with another strong round of nett 68, which gave him an impressive winning margin of eleven shots over Ethan Hall (Knole Park), who had two steady rounds of nett 71 and 73.

An enjoyable albeit tough day, played in good spirit. Well done all!
