Junior Championships 2022

Date published: 30 Aug 2022

Conditions were difficult at Rochester and Cobham with rain affecting the whole of the morning’s play. Despite this, scoring was still very respectable. In the Boys’ Championship, Max Murray (Sundridge Park) took an early lead with a gross 69, closely followed by three players on level par 71 – Justin Chenu (Chelsfield Lakes), Luca Esposito (Knole Park) and Finn Lord (Royal St. George’s).

The afternoon brought mixed fortunes for the boys. Max Murray followed up with a 71 which was enough for him to take the title by three shots from Billy Scamp (Chelsfield Lakes) who moved up from the pack by adding a one-under par 70 to his morning 73. Robert Payne (Kings Hill) had two steady rounds of 74, 72 to take third scratch.

Alas, it was not Finn Lord’s day. He would have finished second had he not realised just before the presentation that he had signed for a wrong score, and he duly disqualified himself. It will be no consolation but he received a hearty round of applause for his sportsmanship. All credit to him.

Justin Chenu continued his good form to take the nett honours with an impressive total of 132, with home player, Riley Dowle, taking second place on 139. Kieran Parkins (Sundridge Park) completed the top three.

The Girls’ scratch was won by Sasha Hellen (Dartford) with a total of 161, on countback from Laura-Mai McCarthy (West Malling). The Nett prize went to Anouk Woodhouse (Sene Valley) with 145.

In the 18 hole Handicap Trophy it was a clean sweep for the girls this year. Alice Chou (Mid-Kent) had a fabulous nett 54 to win by six shots from Mia Bolton (The London Club). Chloe Samuel (Dartford) rounded out the top three with a nett 67.

The G. Hayward trophy for most promising player was presented to George Leach (Prince's).

We wish Max and Sasha all the best for their respective Champion of Champions tournaments at Woodhall Spa where they will both be proudly representing Kent. Sasha will be playing this Saturday, 3 September at 7.50am and 1pm. Max is playing on Saturday 10 September, time to be confirmed.

Good luck!
