Kent Golf Veterans Club Championship

Date published: 8 Sep 2022

This year’s Kent Golf Veterans Club Championship final was contested by Sene Valley and Nizels, with Nizels being the venue courtesy of their status as reigning champions. Despite a very threatening weather forecast we escaped with not even a drop of rain. What a blessing!

Perhaps, not surprisingly, Nizels made a strong start and were up in all matches at the turn. Their first pairing of Martin Taylor and Kevin Light held a one-up lead over the Sene Valley twosome of Pat Walsh and Dave Ward. The second Nizels pair, PJ Rutherford and John Vail raced into a six-up lead over Colin Russell and Andy Morphew, and in the third match, Paul Weaser and Clive Edwards (Nizels) were three to the good against Mike Simmonds and Alan Dickson (Sene Valley).

Despite a valiant effort on the back nine, Sene Valley were not destined to be the winners this year. The middle match finished first with PJ and John recording a 6 and 5 victory. This was swiftly followed by the first pairing of Martin and Kevin bringing home their point on the fifteenth green by a margin of 4 and 3. Paul and Clive were made to work hard for their contribution and were taken all the way to the eighteenth where they won by 1 hole.

All matches were played in a good spirit and Nizels’ hospitality was much enjoyed afterwards.

We look forward to next year and seeing if Nizels can do the hattrick!
