Time to Talk Day

Date published: 2 Feb 2023

#TimeToTalkDay is about everyone being open minded to the idea of talking. Mental health continues to carry a stigma, but it is something we all have, why are we so reserved about talking to others about mental health.

There is no right or wrong way to talk about mental health, however, the tips below can help to ensure you are approaching it in a healthy way.

Ask questions and listen.

This is such a powerful tip. It enables a person to express their current feelings, emotions and struggles as well as enabling you to understand their experience better. It is important to ask open and not leading or judgemental questions like, “What does it feel like?”

Time & Space

Some find it easier to talk during an activity rather than sat down in a formal setting face to face. Some struggle with eye contact – let them lead the time and space of your discussion. It’s easy to start a conversation whilst walking, cooking, or playing a sport, such as golf, whilst feeling like you are in a safe space.

Don’t try to fix it.

Whilst its difficult to see someone you care about having a difficult time, try to resist the urge to fix it. The key for recovery is learning how to manage and recover from mental health problems. It can be a long journey but simply listening and talking can be powerful. Unless they have directly asked for advice, it is best to listen to them.

Don’t change how you treat them.

Don’t forget, just because someone has a mental health problem, they are still the same person. They do not want to be treated differently. The best form of support is keeping it simple, do the things you normally do.

Be patient.

Remember not everyone is ready to talk about what they are going through. That’s ok – the fact you reached out may make it easier for them to talk next time.
