Referee Refresher Day

Date published: 1 Mar 2023

Although our county referees are a highly knowledgeable bunch, a little refresher never goes amiss. Twelve of them assembled at a very chilly Sittingbourne & Milton Regis GC on the last day of February for a presentation by Ash Weller (if you’re ever confronted by a journey of giraffes in your fairway and don’t know what to do, he’s your man!) The excellent presentation covered topics such as an embedded ball in a rivetted bunker face, what to do when you have taken relief from a penalty area only to see your ball (in play and at rest) roll back into the water, and tips for referees on coping with tricky situations and even trickier players!

After some lunchtime fortification the team was ready to tackle the elements for the outdoor practical. Working through various scenarios – taking relief from a path, ball stuck up a tree, what is the definition of a ‘reasonable shot’ - proved a very useful way to reinforce the knowledge of certain rules.

Many thanks to Ash for his time, professionalism and good humour, and our gratitude, also, to Sittingbourne GC for hosting us.

The winner of this quarter’s volunteer draw was Ali McGuirk from Prince’s. Congratulations!
