Michele Desmond becomes the first woman to be elected as Chair of Knole Park GC since the formation of the club. Congratulations on your recent appointment, Michele!
Knole Park Golf Club in Sevenoaks, Kent have elected Michele Desmond as their new Chair, the first woman to hold this role since the formation of the club 100 years ago.
Set within 1,000 acres of magnificent parkland, Knole Park GC is regarded as Kent's No. 1 inland course and is regularly named in the Top 100 courses to play in England. The club has a rich heritage and tradition, while also being forward thinking, welcoming and inclusive.
In January 2021 the club became one of the early signatories to the R&A's global "˜Women in Golf Charter'. The charter aims to inspire an industry wide commitment to developing a more inclusive culture within golf all around the world, in the hope of increasing the number of women and girls in the sport.
Outgoing Chairman Colin Gray stated, "The club's nominations committee were in no doubt that Michele has the combination of skills, capabilities and experience that make her the best person to lead the club for the next three years, regardless of gender. At the same time it is great news that Michele, having led the Women in Golf initiative at Knole Park from the outset, will be in a position to see its contribution to the continuing modernisation of the club."
Club Secretary John Somerville-Hendrie commented, "Knole Park is a family friendly club, it's very welcoming and forward-thinking. Our pledge to commit to the Women in Golf Charter was a huge step forward in shifting the culture and making fundamental changes which will hopefully encourage more women and girls into the game of golf. Michele's election as Chair at our recent AGM is an important marker of our continued progress. We have already seen the benefits of gender diversity in the running of the club, and this will only increase as we move forward."
