Junior Spring Meeting report

Date published: 6 Apr 2023

With the mercury reaching minus four overnight, it was a chilly start at Faversham GC for this year’s Junior Spring Meeting, but it was at least bright with the sunshine making an occasional appearance.

With fifty-four playing in the medal and nine in the stableford, it was a fantastic turn-out for our first major junior event of the year. In fact, so enthusiastic were they, the machine on the practice range had run out of balls by midday!

The stableford competition saw some very good scoring with Alice Chou (Rochester and Cobham) taking third place on 40 points. River Fontanelli (Faversham), in her first 18-hole competition, put in a splendid performance to take second place on 42 points, but top marks go to our stableford winner, Alexander McKay (Knole Park), who won with 43 points. Well played!

The medal event was closely contested with third place nett being won with a 69 by Jonathon Corstorphine (Wildernesse). In second place, just missing out on countback, was Jack Maher (Royal Blackheath), with the honours going to Harry Fryer (Rochester and Cobham) who took the nett trophy with a 68.

There was also a countback situation in the scratch competition between Tom Paterson (Boughton) and Abe Bignell (Kings Hill) who both scored 72, with Abe taking second place courtesy of his better back nine. But taking the scratch trophy with a fine level par round of 70 was Jack Swift (North Foreland).

Jack thanked the club in his winner’s speech for their hospitality, and the greenkeepers for presenting the course in such good condition – sentiments that were echoed by all the players. A good start to the season!
