Kent Women’s Amateur Championship

Despite the weather’s best efforts to scupper the Women’s Amateur Championship this year, we managed to press on and get it played, albeit in a shortened format of 18 holes. The team at Sheerness GC worked tirelessly to make it happen and provided us with what must surely be some of the finest greens in Kent. Sadly, due to heavy rainfall on the two days prior to play, we also had waterlogged fairways and out-of-play bunkers, but these did at least afford the referees plenty of opportunity to apply their knowledge and I’m sure many of the players were grateful for their presence and advice!
This year’s Team Shield Competition (best two scratch scores from up to five) had an impressive ten different clubs taking part, but nine of them were left standing by the Knole Park duo of Lucia Masding and Annabel Dalton who won by the comprehensive margin of eleven shots.
This good form meant that Annabel won the Nett trophy with a 71 – the only score under par on the day – and also came third in the Scratch competition. A good day’s work! Second place in the Nett went to Skye Fontanelli (Faversham) with a 74, one stroke ahead of third-placed Maureen Fentiman (Chestfield) who was delighted to receive her prize from Club Captain Ben! Second place in the Scratch Championship went to Lucia Masding with a 76 (on countback from her clubmate Annabel), but one stroke ahead, and defending her title with another admirable performance, was Ellie Burdis (West Kent) who becomes Kent Champion for 2023. Many congratulations!
Some kind words from Sheerness President, Paul, wrapped up the presentation and it was clear to see the players appreciated the club’s efforts and hospitality.
Ellie will now go forward to represent Kent in the Champions event at Woodhall Spa on the 9th and 10th of September. We wish her well and know she will do us proud.
