The 2023 Kent Men's Amateur is being hosted this weekend by The Royal St. George's GC, Sandwich. This prestigious club has hosted numerous Open Championships and elite amateur events and we are delighted to be their guests.
On a horribly cold and windy Friday morning, 67 players with handicaps of 2 and below assembled at the links for the 36-hole stroke play element. With only the top 16 progressing to the weekend match play, competition would naturally be fierce.
The morning pace was set by Oliver Lewis-Perkins (Mid Kent) who opened his campaign with a fine 68, which would turn out to be the only score all day to beat the strict par of 70. Hot on his heels was Tom Sherreard (Kings Hill) with a 71. There then followed a clutch of players who had scored in the mid-70s so, for many of the field, all was still to play for.
With no discernible improvement in the weather, it was more of the same in the afternoon round. Tom improved by one to post a total of 141, one-over-par, and took top spot on countback from Oliver who backed up his 68 with a steady 73. Jacob Kelso (Kings Hill) was third with scores of 76, 70, followed by Liam Burns (Chislehurst) with 75,72. Just behind, on a total of 148, were Conor Byers (Langley Park) and Ed Richardson (Redlibbets). The other qualifiers were Jake Potter (Chelsfield Lakes), Nick Panting (Rochester and Cobham), Daniel Cooke (Canterbury), Connor Bell (Royal Blackheath), Josh Dugard (Chelsfield Lakes), Jack Swift (North Foreland), Tony Adams (Prince's), Danny Jones (Wildernesse), Ollie Sly (Knole Park) and Jack Read (Royal Blackheath).
