Kent Men's Amateur Championship day 2 report

Date published: 3 Jun 2023

Well, the wind at Royal St. George's showed no sign of abating but at least the sun made an appearance! The morning match play session would see the 16 qualifiers halved to eight and top seed, Tom Sherreard (Kings Hill), wasted no time in racing to a 3-up lead after 9 holes against Jack Read (Royal Blackheath). Tom extended his lead to 4-up after 12 and Jack was unable to stop him running out a 5&4 winner.

At the other end of the draw, second seed, Oliver Lewis-Perkins (Mid Kent), had a harder time of things. One down to Oli Sly (Knole Park) at the turn, he worked hard to turn it around for a 3&2 victory. There was a good win for Ed Richardson (Redlibbets) who triumphed over Josh Dugard (Chelsfield Lakes) by the score of 4&3, and three matches finished on the seventeenth green with a score of 2&1 - Nick Panting (Rochester & Cobham) beating Daniel Cooke (Canterbury), Liam Burns (Chislehurst) beating Tony Adams (Prince's), and Jake Potter (Chelsfield Lakes) beating Connor Bell (Royal Blackheath). Two matches went the full distance, the first of which saw in-form Jack Swift (North Foreland) taking the scalp of Conor Byers (Langley Park) by one hole, and the second saw Danny Jones (Wildernesse) holding his nerve to win by the same margin against Jacob Kelso (Kings Hill) and book the last quarter-final slot.

In the afternoon matches there were fast starts all round. Danny Jones found himself three to the good after three holes against Ed Richardson and unfortunately, not too much later, Ed was forced to retire which meant that Danny was the first to book his semi-final place. Tom Sherreard also found himself 3-up after three holes against Nick Panting, a lead he increased to four at the turn. Sadly for Nick he was unable to halt Tom's progress and Tom ran out a 6&5 winner. Jake Potter took an early lead against Oliver Lewis-Perkins and was still two ahead at the turn. Oliver then won the next four holes to go two up himself and held firm to win 2&1.

The last match out on the course - Liam Burns against Jack Swift - was a tight affair. Jack was ahead for most of the game with some good scoring on the front nine but Liam started to turn things around and the match was all square again after 16. Liam had a chance to win on 18 but 3 putts from the "˜Duncan's Hollow' meant extra holes were required. A fine birdie by Liam on the 19th dashed Jack's hopes but sets up the prospect of an exciting semi-final on Sunday morning with Tom Sherreard.

The second semi-final will be between Danny Jones and Oliver Lewis-Perkins and we look forward to the prospect of some fine golf on the morrow.
